preliminary task - final cut

For the task , we all took on individual roles . My roles were to be the protagonist of the piece , and I also helped Lindsay with editing.

The task in which we took on was to create a short film , consisting of a shot reverse shot , 180 degree rule and had involve someone walking into a room.

During the planning , we discussed at length different ideas , considering whether they would work or not, and we finally settled upon the idea of having the plot be about the protagonist being told shocking news and rushing up to tell people. we then created a story board to accompany our ideas , and this can be seen in a previous post.

For the mise en scene , we decided upon setting the piece in a school , as this would be easy for us to work in a school environment , and would also work well for our piece.
when thinking about camera angles , we decided that we wanted to take and use several different shots , such as tilt shots , close ups and shots which agree with the 180 degree rule ,but would also look good for editing effects.
when looking at sounds , for the score , i came up with the idea of using the intro to the song 'Hysteria' by Muse. I decided this would be good song to use as we wanted to build up tension in our piece , and the intro to Hysteria provided an aid to build this up , as it builds up to a climax. i also decided to use 'Chariots of fire' in our piece as well , as we wanted to add a aspect of humour , and this applies and can be seen at the end of our piece in which you can see for yourself.
when it came to the editing of the piece , the main factor we decided to follow was the 180 degree rule , as we could get many shots from different angles , in order to be creative. We used serif movie plus to do our editing as Lindsay was familiar with using this , and we was able to trim , speed up/slow down sections of film in order to make the piece run smoothly.

Overall , i feel that the piece turned out very well , and that the group worked together well as a team. there was hassle with filming as we had to time when we would have the space to ourselves and would not be interrupted , in which we encountered  a few times when filming. if we were to do the task again , i feel that we should get more filming done , as it would give us more to work with.

upcoming film websites

When looking at the websites for films in which are coming out soon in cinemas , we are able to see a big hype surronding the release and aspects put in , in order to attract the public to come and see the film upon release. There is currently films in the rom com genre coming out soon , therefore i will be looking at ones from other genres.

When looking at this website , in support of the new Iron Man film, the first thing in which sticks out first is the video . this video is the trailer for the film and shows several scenes of action . these scenes are essential as it gives the audience a taste and leaves them wanting more , thats why it is the first thing on the entire website in which you are drawn to.

when looking at another film website , the website for the new star trek movie , we are able to see this page consists mainly of a poster for the film. the fact that it fills the entire page makes it unmissable and makes you see a scene of destruction. this makes the audience wonder what has happend and may attract them to go and watch the film to find out. there is also an app on the top of the page in which it says you can download and see the film first. star trek consists of a lot of technology and goes along with this theme by having this app.

film ratings

  U is a classification in which is given to a film in which generally can be seen by any member of the public. These films are mainly for family viewing , but can also be aimed at a specific audience , without breaking out of the restrictions of being categorised as U.
In these films , there is no discrimination or references to drugs.

PG is a classification in which is given to films in which are suitable for most people ,apart from children who may need a parent to watch the film with them as they may get upset at a particular part of a film. There maybe mild language and/or violence but not enough to leave influence on young children viewers . 

 12 rating is the rating given to films in which are suitable for anyone over the age of 12. These films can contain mild violence and also may have more mild language , but these will still be at a low usage , unless used in a non influential way. There may also be use of racism , which could be used in a comical way , or a discriminate way , but this will be kept to a minimum.sexual reference may also be apparent.

15 is the rating given to films in which are suitable for people over the age of 15. These films tend to be aimed at young adults and these films are generally horror or comedies. there is a general use of strong language in these films , and there may also be a general use of sexual, drug and alcohol references. violence may also be a factor and scenes may be very graphic at times.

18 rated films are the most restricted kinds of films and is the highest rating that will appear in a cinema. these films are mainly seen to be horror films and contain scenes of extreme violent and graphic scenes. other movies in which can be seen in this category are action and thrillers , due to the violence and even sometimes the extremity of the sexual nature in the film.

Another poster from the rom com genre in which we are able to look at is this one for the film valentines day. when looking at this poster , one of the first things in which we are able to notice is that there is a massive heart shape in the middle of it. The outline of the heart is in pink , and this is stereotypically a womens/ girls colour, so it could be connoted from this that this is primerally aimed at a female audience. when we look inside the heart, we are able to see that there are lots of famous faces in it , which may attract audience members to watch because of the amazing cast list. Another thing to note on is that the cast mainly consists of attractive celebrities which may also attract the public to watch. This is common in romcoms as popular attractive actors and actresses are cast a lot in these types of films in order to attact the audience to watch.

costumes

when looking at costuming in rom coms , it is able to be seen that the costume for the ladies is ussually quite dressy. this maybe a connotation for aiming to attract to a female audience as they maybe able to find it relateable in a way , and/or this maybe to support the female gender , which most women will also support. one example we can see this in , is the film pretty women , ironically.

In this film , Julia Roberts is dressed in some very provocative clothing as she is an escort , but when at the end , she gets with Richard Gere , she is wearing very fancy clothing , but she has always looked pretty throughout the film , so therefore possibly supporting women as a beautiful gender ?

In other rom coms , we see women acting very laid back in a comical way , and not wearing fancy clothes. In films like Bridget Jones Diary , she doesnt dress up very much , and is seen as a very relateable idol to many women .

There is a mix between rom com films , when it comes to clothing , as some are as laid back as possible with no frills , and others potray women as being very elegant and pretty.

costumes and make up

when looking at costumes for our piece , we decided that for the flashback scene , we would need to have quite vintage clothing as the old man would be looking at memories from the 1950's , when he would have been in his youth. when looking at the clothing for the man , when he was in his youth , we decided that a grey tweed blazer , a black shirt , black shoes and grey trousers would work well and go along with the vintage look.

when looking at clothing for the old man's younger companion , we decided to look at many different styles of dresses from the 50's era' as there is lots of choice of dresses from that time period. After looking at these types of dresses , and comparing them to the dresses we had available , we finally decided on using a dress in which consisted of a navy blue blouse with cream spots , with a elasticated waitband and a cream skirt. we then looked at shoes to go with the dress , that brown brogues would work well with the dress , and were also able to get hold of a pair of these as well.

we decided to then turn to make up for the female companion , and decided after looking at styles of make up from that era , that red lipstick and foundation and blusher would give off the right effect.

Costume for the old man was not a problem as the clothes our actor already had on were suitable enough to go along with his age .

locations

when looking at different locations for our piece , we decided to look at using local places , like public parks in which had wide and vast spaces. places in which came to mind when thinking about this was places like sutton lawn , portland park, kingsway park , Brieley forest park; all local beauty spots in our area.

 

 

 

 

After looking at many locations , we decided that sutton lawn would be best to use as it provided the widest and best conditions for what we would be filming .

mise en scene, props and lighting

when thinking about the mise en scene for our opening , we thought about the two spaces we would be using. the first space that we were to use was the old mans room. for this , we used Lindsay(the person who which i was working on this project with)'s grandma's house. This was convenient as the actor who played the vold man was Lindsay's grandad , so this was easier for him and us. we decided to use his bedroom as the decor in the room matched the effect we wanted the old man to have in his room.when filming in here , we decided to have a dog on the old mans lap ,to represent that this was his only companion , as he had lost his wife. we also used a picture of me and my girlfriend vicky , also lindsays sister, on the side , for the old man to look at .this was because i would be playing a younger version of him and vicky his wife , in the flashback , which stems off from him looking at the picture. we decide to have the lighting , during the filming of this scene , to be very dull , to represent the light in his life disapearing ,due to losing his wife.

when looking at the flashback scene , we decided that we would want this to show a contrast and had used natural lighting of the day , which was sunny , which we wanted to represent the happiness of the couple. the idea of using a public lawn which had a pond , was one we had from the outset as we felt that this would create a very romantic feel as you may see lots of couples in these places. the fact that there was lots of trees and a pond gave us natural props to incorporate into the back ground , as these could be connoted as romantic setting factors. For one of the flashback scenes , the young man and woman are having a picnic. We used an old fashioned picnic basket for this as we felt that this would fit with the time as well as the contents in the basket , which consisted of fruit. The blanket we used also fited with the time as it was handmade , like many blankets were in those days.









   
  

planning of soundtrack

When thinking about the type of soundtrack for our piece , we realised that we would have to use music that didnt have a copyright on it , as this would make the piece be more independant and gives for a more original effect, as we did not have the money to pay an artist for the use of their music. Therefore , in the light of all of this , we decided to look on websites in which had royalty free music , in which we would be able to use without any hassle. Websites in which we looked at included :  http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/categories/soundtracks.html,

On these websites , we were able to browse through many genres of music , and we finally settled upon the song easy lemon. we felt that this song went along with the mellow feel that we wanted and would fit perfectly into the background. whilst we were editing , we also decided to put the sound of an old movie reel for the flashbacks and we recorded a voice over in order to set the scene.
