story board- gathering inspiration

After we had thought about the different ideas for what we wanted our piece to be , we generated a simple storyboard in order to be the base of what we would spring off for when we were thinking of further ideas to get the best from our piece.

We also made another story board which we made on post it notes in order to fixate ideas on certain aspects of the film.

audiences

Audiences are important for the film industry as without them , the fim industry would purely not be around today.

One film in which i have decided to look at , whilst researching rom coms is the film 500 Days Of Summer. when looking at the statistics for this film , i discoverd that this film is primeraly popular with young people.

after looking at these statistics , i decided to compare these statistics with the ones from other films of the romcom genre.

after looking at 2 more films from the genre , it is clear to see that this is the mainly the case , althought it should be noted that imbd is mainly visted by males , therefore these votes are not tottaly accurate.

research for brief

For our brief ,we have to do some research into the genre , which is :
examples of films which fit this genre are :

When looking at these movies , it is able to be seen that they all follow the same generic rule of having two people fall in love with each other , with a few hiccups along the way , which help to adds to the comical effect , as these are usually played out in an over dramatic way. Aspects of Romcoms have been round since early 20th century , as can be seen in movies such as some like it hot , but the main genre of Romcoms appeared in the 1990's after when harry met sally became such a big hit.

official briefs to choose from

For our piece , we decided to choose brief number 1, as we felt that this would be a good task to takle on , and that we would be able to do a lot of research into the genre.

Briefs

For our project , we have been given 4 briefs in which we have to follow one , when it comes to mastering our final piece. Before we can choose what brief we use , we have to research each of the different briefs , and have to look at the codes of conventions of each.

The four briefs we have been given are : sci-fi, romcom/drama, comic book and films based on true events.

codes and conventions

Typical sci-fi : aliens , future, space, conflicts between lifeforms, technological influence, droids, lasers, low key lighting, abduction, and different empires to name a few.
Films which can be seen as using these are Star Trek and Star Wars.

Typical romcom/drama:boy meets girl ,separated , get back together , obstacles, mainly happy endings, attractive protagonists, aimed at young women and stereotypical idea of love to name a few.
Films which can be seen using these are Valentines day and Love Actually.

Typical comic book : often in America, big cities where things can go wrong/ take place, things that effect the public but also have own issues as well, hero/villain/damsel in distress, justice and superpowers to name a few.
Films where these can be seen are Kick Ass and The Dark Knight.

Typical films based on true events : factual , adapted from biography/memoirs, portrayed by famous faces and dramatic.
Films where this can be seen are Walk The Line and Nowhere Boy

opening scene analysis - a relationship comedy/drama

Submarine opening scene
Mise en scene :Establishing shot set in boys bedroom , different to a normal boys bedroom though , because there is a lot of books , and scientific objects , showing a counter type to the typical English teenage boy. In a seaside village , secluded from the life of the city , very different lifestyle.
Camera angles :Panning shots used to show the boys bedroom , to set the establishing shot up to pan onto the protagonist. close up shots then used to show the protagonist more , in order for the viewer to see who he is , as it is him who is telling the story.
Sound: Diegetic sound of the seaside tells us where the story is going to take place. monologue told by the boy to introduce his thoughts and views , and an introduction to himself. The score is very calm and reprsents the calmness of the seaside amd his environment.
Editing:Different shots of the environment in which the boy lives , have been put together to accompany the calmness of the song. Inner monolgue played over the top of an ongoing scene to show his feelings at that moment in time .
